According to an official 8 April 2021 notice, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) will confirm no later than 1 July 2021 its deregulation of the 5925MHz to 6425MHz band for indoor use by low- power wireless information transmission equipment, provided that such use does not interfere with legitimate communications and tolerates interference therefrom.
In June 2020 the MOTC issued a consultation paper on its plan to use the 5925MHz to 7125MHz band, which is currently used by existing radio stations. The 5925MHz to 6425MHz band is used for public communications trunked networks. The World Radiocommunication Conference 2003 also resolved that such band is for use by earth stations on vessels. The 6245MHz to 7125MHz band is used by other relay microwave stations as the harmonised band.
In the consultation paper, the MOTC noted that the US Federal Communications Commission had adopted a resolution to designate the 5925MHz to 7125MHz band, with a total bandwidth of 1200MHz, as a licence-free spectrum released in 2020. It also noted that a similar approach had been explored in Korea and the European Union. Expected technologies available for the 5925MHz to 7125MHz band include the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standard 802.11 for WiFi 6E and 3rd Generation Partnership Project 5G new radio unlicensed (NR-U) specification, which is divided into Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) and Standalone NR-U.
According to the MOTC’s 8 April 2021 notice, the 6336MHz to 7920MHz band remains for use under secondary conditions by low power radio frequency equipment that uses ultra-wideband technologies.
